There are four streets in Fresno which would, judged by the names, appear to demarcate the city of Fresno. These named North Ave., East Ave., South Ave. and West Ave. North Avenue is 5 miles north of of South Ave. and East Ave. is 3 miles east of West Ave., so this forms a 5 by 3 mile rectangle. One would guess that this is area would be the city of Fresno.
Yesterday, we decided to drive to the center of this "Fresno." So we had to go 2-1/2 miles south of North Ave., which aligns with Jefferson Ave. And we had to go 1-1/2 miles west of East Ave., which aligns with Fig Ave. So here it is, the intersection of Jefferson and fig:

Doesn't look much like downtown, does it?
I don't know what the rationale for naming North, South, East, and West Avenues was. We live in Southeast Fresno city, in fact, we are almost on the edge of the southern city limit of Fresno. Yet even though we live East of East Ave. and North of North Ave., we are in the city limits of Fresno.
But now we can say we've been to the center: halfway between East and West Avenues and halfway between North and South Avenues. And maybe one day someone will explain to me why Central Avenue is only 1 mile south of North Ave. instead of 2-1/2 miles south (which would make it the central distance between North and South Avenues.
Don't get lost out there.
